Diaz goes the distance in win

BASEBALL
Chambersburg 5, Central Dauphin 0: Joey Diaz fired a complete game 4-hitter, walked just one and struck out 11 to lift the Trojans to a shutout win over the Rams in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Greene Township Park on Monday.

Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said, "Joey's had mostly good outings all year, but today's game was probably as good as any of our guys have thrown that I can remember. He started by giving up back-to-back hits, but after that he controlled the game. He just pounded the strike zone — the only walk he gave up was with two outs in the seventh."

The Trojans (6-12, 4-10 MPC) scored a run in the second inning, then added 2 insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings against Central Dauphin (11-7, 8-5 MPC).

In the second, Diaz singled and Chase Stenger walked, and with two outs, Aaron Vasquez hit an RBI base hit.

Evan Brown led off the fifth with a double to left and moved up on a fly ball by Ceagan Truett. After a walk to Tyler Brechbiel, Jake Folmar bunted, and on the play at the plate, Brown scored. With two outs, Chase Stenger produced a base hit to make the score 3-0.

In the sixth, Vasquez led off with a walk and moved to third on an error on a fly ball hit by Truett. Brechbiel lofted a sacrifice fly to center to score Vasquez and a two-out single by Folmar scored the final run.

"The offense got some two-out RBI hits that we haven't been able to get most of the year," coach Folmar said. "Those made a big difference and enabled Joey to pitch with a bigger lead."

The Trojans play at Shippensburg on Tuesday in their final game of the season. The suspended game vs. Waynesboro, in which Chambersburg led 5-0 in the top of the fifth inning, will not be finished because both teams had games Monday and will play Tuesday, and Tuesday is the cutoff date for district qualifying.
